This study was conducted to look into the involvement of youth in solid waste management activities of Poblacion, Bontoc, Mountain Province for the calendar year 1999. The areas of concern were the extent of involvement of youth in such activities and the degree of seriousness of problems encountered. The study looks into consideration the variables of gender and purok of the respondents.
The study further determined if there are significant relationship between gender and purok and the perceptions of the respondents.
The descriptive method of research was used in the study with the questionnaire as the main toll of gathering data.
The findings of the study are as follows:
1. The youth are moderately involved in the solid waste management activities of Poblacion, Bontoc, Mountain Province.
As to the relationship between gender and the perception of the respondents, it came out that female respondents are more involved in the activities than their male counterpart. Thus, there is a significant relationship between gender and the perception of the youth regarding their involvement in solid waste management activities.
As to the variable of purok, it came out that the puroks where more female respondents reside are the areas where youth are more involved. Thus, there is a significant relationship between purok and the perception of the respondents.
2. The youth perceived the problems to be quite serious. As to the relationship between gender and the perceptions of the respondents on the degree of seriousness of problems, the study found out that there is no significant relationship between the two.
As to the relationship between purok and the perception of the youth regarding the degree of seriousness of problems, it came out that the youth residing in puroks which are densely populated perceived the problems to be more serious than those residing in puroks which are not so populated. Thus, there is a significant relationship between purok and the perception of the youth.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions were derived:
1. Female youth are more involved in solid waste management activities of Poblacion, Bontoc, Mountain Province.
2. The problems encountered by the youth in their involvement in solid waste management activities are quite serious.
In view of the findings and conclusions, the following are recommended:
1. The municipality and barangay officials should create awareness of the youth on proper waste disposal by tapping them as implementors of the solid waste management activities of the community.
2. Government agencies as well as nongovernment organizations are encouraged to organize and conduct trainings on environmental issues such as waste management that would enlighten the community especially the youth as ignorance is one cause of environmental impoverishment.
3. The municipal and barangay officials should monitor strictly the waste disposal of traders and business people so as to maintain cleanliness especially in Loc-ong and the Market Area.
4. The municipality of Bontoc should still look into the possibility of constructing an incinerator in a strategic place so as not to endanger the health of the people.
5. The full cooperation of community members should be enjoined so that the solid waste management program of the municipality will succeed.
