Summary, etc. | This study aimed to determine the effect of crushed glass as a partial replacement of fine aggregates in the characteristics of Hollow Blocks. The methodological process involved were crushing of waste glass, sieving and separating it into two particle sizes, then mixing and molding it in a 4" hollow block mold. The study used two types of crushed glass: fine and coarse, and three design mix ratios for the two types: 40:60; 50:50; and 60:40, including a mixture with no crushed glass added. The samples were all tested after 7 days and 28 days of curing. Results showed that there is a significant effect of crushed glass. The hollow blocks with crushed glass surpassed the standard hollow block. There has been an increase in compressive strength, and decrease in water absorption and density. Compared to the minimum required compressive strength for individual samples set by the DPWH, two samples with coarser crushed glass and a mix ratio of 40:60 passed. From the results, it is recommended to use crushed glass, with a coarser particle size and a design mix ratio of 40:60 (40 % crushed glass and 60% sand) as a partial replacement of fine aggregates in making Hollow Blocks. The researchers prompted to recommend further study particularly on the other properties like fire resistance, efflorescence and the workability of concrete mix. |
